Our mission and How you can help

Prosthetic arms are very expensive, and since children grow out of them so quickly, funding can be very difficult to secure - especially in less developed countries.

For the 1 in 10,000 children born with a hand difference like symbrachydactyly, being born without bones in the fingers, often kids have no choice but to go without.

At Free 3D Hands, we use 3D printing technology to reduce the cost of manufacture to a point where we can provide assistive devices for free, to anyone in the world. We share our ideas and collaborate with prosthetists, orthopaedic surgeons, hand therapists, limb difference and amputee support groups, occupational therapists and progressive bionic companies all over the world to accelerate development and make prosthetics more accessible. All of our designs are released under open-source licenses to encourage further development and innovation in this field.

We feel that it is the responsibility and obligation for society to look after all disadvantaged members of the community. Families should not be financially burdened for devices that will improve one's quality of life- it shouldn't cost one cent at all.

Your donation, however small, will help us continue to help the families who need it most. Free 3D Hands is a charitable organisation and all donations of $2 or more are tax deductible.

You can use the secure form on this page to donate via credit card or PayPal, or visit our Donations page for details on making a direct deposit or payment by cheque.

“Mat Bowtell gave his revolutionary designs away for free, when he could have laughed all the way to the bank. Measure him by that, I say. Mat’s exquisite engineering mind and genuine social conscience prove that he is born to do this work. It’s pretty simple, if we help him, he will help many.”

Samuel Johnson OAM
Victorian Australian of the Year, 2018

"Mat Bowtell is one of the loveliest people we have met. He drove up to Wollongong from Melbourne to meet our daughter Kalani to hand deliver her first 3D prosthetic hand. It was the best thing that had ever happened to us and our little 3 year old Kalani. Since we have met Mat he has kept us close in his busy world and we continue a beautiful friendship. Mat has brought Kalani so much confidence with her 3D prosthetic hand and also with her new skipping rope adaptor which she uses more now for learning how to play the drums. His ideas are endless for kids and adults without hands and with what he does brings endless joy and happiness to people in Australia and all around the world that can access these vital tools for free on the internet. Without people like Mat in the world we would be so lost in finding a good direction for our daughter Kalani. But in this world of technology and engineering, Mat Bowtell restores the faith in humanity and all others around the world giving everyone missing limbs happiness in life. Not only for those that are born this way, but for adults who have lost limbs later in life. He does all this for no profit or gain. He does this out of his heart and he does it for FREE. We are forever grateful. Thank you Mat and your family for giving up everything to help others.

Natalie, mother of Kalani xxxx"
